Yobiiro at 3daysofdesign

Produced by ZOZO NEXT

ZOZO NEXT’s project Yobiiro will be exhibited at the design festival 3daysofdesign, held in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Yobiiro is a project that connects contemporary technology with traditional crafts from various regions and introduces them to society as products, with the aim of awakening the senses, emotions, and the latent sensibilities within people.

The project seeks to regard subtle changes in everyday life—such as light, fragrance, and temperature—as the “colors” that enrich our daily experiences. Just as a small amount of water drawn from a well can bring forth an abundant flow, Yobiiro aims to create opportunities for people to discover new sensations. Through collaborations with artisans, production regions, and technologists, the project explores forms of value that cannot be measured by functionality or numerical performance alone, but instead by what can be felt and experienced.

This exhibition showcases products and prototypes that combine traditional Japanese crafts—including lacquerware, porcelain, textiles, and washi paper—with technologies such as thermochromic materials that change color with temperature, phosphorescent threads, reflective threads, iridescent yarns whose colors shift through polarization, and technologies that transform the movement of wind into sound.

Among the works on display are temperature-responsive porcelain that quietly reflects the changing seasons through subtle shifts in color, hitotose; contemporary lacquerware designed for modern living, URUSHICA; PIXEL WEAVE ーHakata-oriー, which presents different expressions by day and night through the use of multicolored phosphorescent threads; and the dreamlike lighting piece Seikyo, where the subtle textures of washi paper and phosphorescent light intersect to create distinct appearances when illuminated and unlit. The exhibition will also feature THERMO TEXTILE Series, whose patterns change in response to the warmth of hands or hot beverages, lamps whose colors shift through the heat generated by LEDs, and prototypes that reinterpret traditional Japanese wind chimes, allowing people to perceive the delicate movement of wind through sound.

What these works share is a focus on the often-overlooked changes that occur in everyday life—light, temperature, shadow, wind, and physical touch. The moments when materials quietly transform their appearance engage the senses of those who use and observe them, inviting new awareness into daily life.

Yobiiro does not seek merely to preserve traditional crafts as relics of the past, nor to enhance functionality through technology alone. Together with artisans, production regions, and technologists, the project explores values rooted in perception and experience, bringing “the first drop” into everyday life. Through the accumulation of these moments, Yobiiro aims to gradually shape the landscapes of the future.

We invite you to experience in Copenhagen a new sensibility for future living, born from the encounter between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary technology.

Alternative Crafts

Produced by ZOZO NEXT

Japanese crafts have been passed down throughout the country to the present day. Many people may have the impression that these are "techniques that have remained unchanged since ancient times." While this is certainly one aspect, they have also evolved over their long history in response to the times. In other words, crafts can be said to be endeavors that have accumulated cutting-edge ideas of their respective eras. At ZOZO NEXT, we aim to create a society where people can enjoy fashion more freely through the power of technology. As a fashion tech company, we have continued to develop technologies to make people's lives a little newer, more interesting, and richer. In recent years, we have been working on the fusion of crafts and cutting-edge technology. In this exhibition, we will display and sell works from our new project named "Yobiiro." Centered on cutting-edge technology, we have collaborated with various traditional craft production areas and contemporary craft makers. If Japanese crafts were to transform through modern technology, what kind of lifestyle could be realized? Please come and experience these new possibilities.
